Whatever is for us is the latest response to stones. For Common Good in January 2026 the short story Solid Objects by Virginia Woolf was offered as a provocation. It’s about a man who becomes obsessed with finding the perfect object, after finding a perfect worn piece of green glass on a beach. He keeps them on his mantle piece. It’s a story to me that speaks of longing, of waiting to be found or is it seen? Of discovery and finding beauty in unexpected places. The story made me want to try to be a stone.
I stapled together paper covered in wax rubbings. I made a small version for my head, before placing it on a mantle piece alongside some collages. Hiding within a larger stapled together one I went into the landscape and crouched, waiting, moving very slowly, being rolled by time. Finally I squashed the costume into small pebbles and threw them into a stream.
