I was invited by Peterborough Presents to create a series of public artworks for festivals in Millfield and Bretton – areas of the city that historically have been overlooked. My proposal for 20 flags responded to this fact and research that showed how being ignored is as detrimental to self-esteem as being ostracised or rejected.
With groups in Bretton I used contemporary and historical photographs to look back to look forward. An approach that helps people consider what was, is and might become important. In Millfield residents and groups reflected on the question: If I see tolerance and empathy, acceptance and ambition – what do you see? Designs grew out of all their ideas.
