The state of us.
2020
These three human-scale charcoal drawings feature homemade chicken crates. I saw them at Melton Mowbray Fur and Feather Market in 2017. The cages and others like them were laid out on long tables, ready for the sale. I was drawn to their DIY construction and the small clutches of Bantam and Sussex chicks they contained. They seem to describe perfectly the struggle I live as a farmer of livestock – one of contradiction – where care and production sit side by side. During the C19 lockdowns I revisited these photos as the little cages seemed the perfect metaphor to describe the experience and the helplessness we all felt.
